With its data rate of up to 10 MBit/s FlexRay is targeting applications such as X-by-wire and the powertrain, which require a deterministic and error-tolerant communication system. With FlexRay a topology has been defined which consists of point-to-point connections with active stars. Advantages of the point-to-point connections are: Ideal bus terminations and therefore minimized reflections, defined electrical behavior, flexible expandability, error limitation to affected branches only, and optimized EMC behavior. Under certain conditions it is also possible to use passive bus structures and tap lines with FlexRay. Optical fibers are suitable as the transmission medium (Physical Layer), but copper lines are also suitable. Up to 64 network nodes may be connected.
