Serial Bus Systems

Due to the immense innovative potential of electronics and its potentials for making car driving safer, more convenient, economical and environmentally friendly, the automobile has experienced an absolutely astounding electronification since the 1970s, which over time has just gained in momentum. Meanwhile, an automobile without electronics is now hardly imaginable. Without electronic control units or serial bus systems that provide reliable data exchange between the electronic ECUs, a large number of welcome gains in safety and convenience functions would simply cease to exist.

CAN bus technology has played a decisive role in the success of electronics in the automobile. It was developed especially for use in automobiles, and for over 15 years now it has served as the data communication system there. In the meantime, up to four different serial bus systems are found in modern cars: CAN, LIN, FlexRay and MOST. Each one serves very specific application domains based on its characteristics.
